Week 4

Week 4 Assignment: Due at the end of Week 4.

Overview

Last week, you engaged in an analysis and wrote a report describing the use of technology and information systems to enrich campus curriculum, enhance teaching and learning, and generally integrate technology into our campus improvement plans to effectively integrate technology and instructional leadership. Your analysis and report should provide the necessary background for the Week 4 major assignment – developing an action plan for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed campus decision making focusing on integrating technology, instructional leadership, professional development and organizational leadership.

As a result of this week's assignments, you will be able to:

  • Examine and assess procedures for gathering, analyzing, and using data from a variety of sources for informed decision making regarding the integration of technology, instructional and organizational leadership (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator);
  • Design and apply skills for monitoring and evaluating change and making needed adjustments to achieve the campus vision and goals, including the integration of technology as described above (SBEC Principal Competency 7 indicator).

Both of these outcomes are elements of Domain II, Instructional Leadership.

In writing your Week 4 action plan, use your interviews, your readings, including campus and district improvement plans as well as any technology plans, and your Week 3 report to make sure the action plan:

  • Identifies data gathering sources;
  • Provides a description of an organizational chart describing decision making responsibilities regarding the integration of technology from central office personnel to campus leadership and staff;
  • Describes comprehensive professional development activities to achieve your action plan (this may utilize information from the previous three weeks of readings and activities);
  • Includes an evaluation plan to assess the progress and success of the action plan.

Students will be asked to post their action plan on the Discussion Board and each student must review and comment on at least one other action plan focusing on organizational leadership designed to maximize the use of technology in data gathering and decision making.

Submit your assignment by 11:59 PM on the seventh day of Week 4.

National Educational Technology Plan

The Obama administration has two clear goals outlined in the National Educational Technology Plan draft. One is to raise the percentage of college graduates with an associates or bachelors degree fro 39% to at least 60% by the year 2020. The other is to close the achievement gap regardless of race, income or neighborhood so that students can graduate from high school ready to succeed in college and careers by the same year mentioned above. The report states that teachers will be supported by technology that connects them to data, resources, expertise, and learning experiences that can empower and inspire them to provide more effective teaching for all learners. Teaching needs to be connected and teachers need to be using 21st century technology to achieve their goals. The report states that all teacher preparation programs need to use the latest technology and make sure their graduates use them also. It is important to make sure our teachers are tech savy and ready to use this tool in educating our 21st century students. Young teachers coming out of college are more advanced in technology than most experienced teachers. The plan states that we must through professional development get the experienced teachers up to speed with technology. Through online training and collaborative effort with education service centers me must stay up with cutting edge technology to become more effective teachers. With all of this said, the recent anticipation of budget cuts in our state is causing a concern on my part of how we will advance technology in our school. Technology cost money and that is what the state is cutting. Technology is the key to our educational future and we need to do whatever it takes to ensure to future of our students.

Progress Report on the Long-Range Plan for Technology

This report was published in 2010. It has been revised many times since its inception in 1988. It is used as a tool to measure the success of technology in Texas school and evaluate or NCLB standards. The teaching and learning portion of the report discuss ways that the state has impacted teaching and learning with the use of technology, for example the Texas Virtual School Network is being implemented to help schools offer a broader range of courses. It also enables schools to offer dual credit courses in an online format for a fraction of the cost of typical dual credit courses. The Educator Preparation and Development states that high quality professional development will be offered for Texas educators to help them become more proficient in technology. Results of the STAR chart show that the Advanced Tech area is on the rise as more Texas educators become comfortable with technology. The Leadership, Administration, and Instructional Support portion of the report revels the STAR chart data. The data shows that the state is moving is the right direction as far as technology is concerned. This part of the Plan covers the fact that schools must have a local technology plan in place to receive E rate funding. The STAR chart must be completed by every teacher in the district to ensure E rate funding also. The Infrastructure portion of the report discusses how schools are allowed the affordability to connect to the internet via broadband connection. Texas is on the cutting edge of broadband making sure that as many households as they can have access to broadband internet services.

Educator Preparation and Development

This area of the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology is important for many reasons. It provides feedback for administrators on how teachers feel about the professional development they receive in the areas of technology. The Campus Statewide Summary suggest that 74.2 percent of teachers fall in the developing tech range of the levels of progress. The teachers on my campus fall into this range also. This suggest that the teacher use of classroom technology is for administrative task, such as taking roll, using grade book, and using school email. Only 40 percent of teachers meet SBEC standards and more professional development in this area is needed. As administrators we must make sure that our teachers are proficient in technology. Teachers must allow technology to become a tool that drives instruction, not just a means for taking roll and entering grades. My school received a grant that allowed us to buy laptops for every employee in the district. Each teacher was issued an elmo and projector for this school year. Many of our teachers are using this new technology to increase productivity in the classroom. We offered training to our teachers before the start of the school year and this professional development has been a success. We purchased star boards or eno boards for our math and science teachers to use on top of the previous mentioned technology. We also provided professional development training for these teachers and they continue to use the tool and become more proficient daily. I feel that our scores in this are of the STAR chart will rise and teachers will become better with technology.
